Representation

Representation is a key aspect in a artist's career, at a basic level we can say that all media are forms of representation. The people involved in making the representation are all governed by their own beliefs, values and attitudes, this means that no representation is objective. Many different modern day artists have very different representations depending on their gender and also their background. For example, 50 Cent has a very "gangster" and hard man view on the audience and people get this impression from him from the music he produces and his background, especially his story of being a drug dealer and getting shot 9 times and still lives.

Other artists act as divas, and these applies primarily to the women. Diva is defined as a celebrated female singer and in the 1920's, in applied to women in the opera, theatre and cinema. However, nowadays divas are somewhat idolised and young teenage girls will want to be like their favourite diva, examples of a diva can include Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and also Lady Gaga.

Women are usually represented in their music videos as sex objects and perform sexually dance moves to illustrate their "perfected" body. However, a representation of an artist can change, a prime example of this would be Christina Aguilera, where at first she is the soft young popstar which writes slow and songs about love and relationships and then changes to an aggressive looking women.
