Examples of A2 music videos

This video we found on Youtube and has had a good response with 28 likes (no dislikes) and over 4,000 views. The effects in this video are something which we want to focus on aswell as the storyline. In alot of dubstep videos there are many effects used in the video to possibly give it that more "club - vibe" to it because of the strobe lights clubs usually have.

The actions and shots in this video change along with the beat, for example at 0.29 the "drop" of the songs occurs and then camera shakes and there are suddenly very fast and short clips.

Final Storyboard Choice

We decided to go with this idea as we believe it will look a lot more professional and it will be easier for us to pull off.

Ideas for Storyboard

The music video style will be a narrative showing the story of a day in a teenage boys life. His father mistreats him and he upset due to the recent death of his mother, he seeks comfort from his girl friend who he later finds has been cheating on him. To deal with his problems he drinks and takes drugs which leads to violence and the video will end with a cliffhanger of him about to commit suicide. Overall the video will be emotioanl and serious journey.

This is our second idea of our storyboard. It is similar to the first idea, however less of a storyline and more about matching to the beat of the music. This idea will probably be easier to shoot and look more professional. This is more similar to most dubstep videos as it is more to do with matching the beat of the music.

Lyrics

Twice I turn my back on you
I fell flat on my face but didn't loose
Tell me where would I go
Tell me what led you on I’d love to know

Was it the blue night
Gone fragile
Was it both men
In wonder steady gone under
Was it the light ways
So frightening
Was it two wills
One mirror holding us dearer now

Thought I had an answer once
But your random ways swept me along
Colossal signs so I got lost
With so many lovers singing soft

Was it the blue night
Gone fragile
Was it both men
In wonder steady gone under
Was it the light ways
So frightening
Was it two wills
One mirror holding us dearer now

Thiis song contains alot of lyrics considering it is a song of the dubstep genre and this is abnomral for a dubstep song. This could be because it isn't as "heavy" as many other dubstep songs of which contain no story line or sometimes contain a message, for example, "The New World Disorder", which is basically saying how the world is ruled and run by huge companies and franchises that have a huge amount of influence on how the world is run.

Audience

To put it simply, theories about audiences are genrally divided into two areas and focused on the effect of the media on individuals. These effects could be short term effects for example a violent reaction after playing a video game or a long term effect.

With electronic music in particular 'Dubstep' it appeals to mainly a male dominated audience aged mainly in their late teens and twenties. This genre will appeal to a few mainstream listeners as there are a few well known artists such as 'Chase and Status' whos album has reached number one, however listeners of 'Dubstep' will mainly be reformers as if they want to find a wider range of songs under the genre it will be harder to find them as they wont be on the charts or on popular radio.
.

Narrative

Narrative music videos can be defined as possibly abstract films. Narrative music videos usually tell a story that more often relates to the artists personal life such as "Everytime" by Britney Spears which depicts the pressure the media and papparazzi put on her and it shows the effects it has on her.

Other storylines may include external issues that are happening around the world such as war and poverty. Many artists have done song to raise awareness of these issues such as:
"Mosh" Eminem: This is about the war in Iraq

"They Don't Care About Us" Michael Jackson: This song is about the problems in the world and how the government is to blame for these issues.

"Time" by Chase and Status is the song that I want to talk about though. The message from this narrative music videos is showing the problem of domestic abuse/violence in a UK household. I find that this has been done in a very delicate way as it is a "sensative" subject, however I do think that it has been done very well. The story shows the evolution of abuse in a household and the effects it has on the family. The video focuses on the older of the two sisters, as she understands what is happening and the effects it is having on her aswell as her mum. The father is an alcoholic and the injuries brought upon the wife and they progessivley get worse as the music video goes on. I find that this video sends a very strong message to whoever watches it and realises the consequences it can have. In the end the older sister eventually calls the police after her mum has been pushed down the stairs and we see the father/husband being escorted out of the house and then we see him being forcifully dragged to his prison cell.

Effects and Shots

In dubstep videos there are many different kinds of shots and even more effects in a video. One of the main effects that we want to do in our video is the effect of a camera facing upwards or behind the character and moves according to their movements. This can be shown in the video "Clapton Dance" by Professor Green:

Also, the effects in a dubstep video illustrate the "power" of the music in a way which the director may not be able to do with people. This song constantly is using effects to give an effect of a club vibe to it and in turn this should open its range of where it can be played.

Contact With Artist

We created a 'Soundcloud' account in order to message the artist 'Bare Noize' to use his song 'Winter Hunter' for our project. He agreed and responded to us positively.

Make up Effects

For our music video we are adding in references of violence. It will be more realistic if we include blood effects and bruising effects. This can be done through the use of make up. There is no need to buy software to add the blood as it would be expensive and probably not look that realistic.

I have looked at various different ways of pulling of this injury effect, bruising will look more realistic and wont be as hard to pull of as say several cuts. Here is one video with some very practical and impressive ways to pull of cuts and bruises effectively:

Obviously this will take time to do so we need to practise applying it before shooting; we will also see what injuries we like the look of.

History of the Music Video

"History of the Music Video

1920's - Silent movies were the only movies available on the big screen
1940's-50's - Musicals (Judy Garland "Get happy")
1950 - First Colour TV
1955 - James Dean killed in car crash
1964 The Beatles starred in their first feature film A Hard Day's Night, directed by Richard Lester. Shot in black-and-white and presented as a mock documentary

1967 - The Beatles - "Strawberry Field" -
1975 - First VCR to ever sell in shops
Queen released their "Bohemian Rapsody" no technological special effects used and it was created themselves and the video was made in 3 hours. It Was the first proper music video, too hard to perform live so it had to be shortened. Directer: Bruce Gower. The famous image of the 4 of their faces is iconic - has been parodyed many times.

1980 - John Lennon murdered.
David Bowie - "Ashes to ashes" - Directer: Kevin Gooley.
Duran Duran - "Planet Earth"
Adam Ant - critism for acting too much rather than performing.
Queen - "Radio GaGa"

Father of MTV - Mike Nesbitt (The Monkey's star)
- Wanted to create a 24 hour music television network.
- Created 'Popclips' channels. - people tuned in to watch the "VJ's" (video jockies)
MTV first launched, the first video they played was "Video killed the Radio star"
However, there was the problem that only around 200 video's were able to be played and it was only the British produced videos being played
British bands were most prominent - (The Cure)

1985 - CD's first avaliable in shops.
MTV wasn't ging to get money if the video's wern't selling records.
MTV went natio wide - was one of the top 40 channels you watched.
MTV became more interested in the way people looked. If you looked good in the video, the record would get played. - Duran Duran - MTV took over their 'look'.
Most expensive video ever made (up to that time) - Wild Boys. - Michael Jackson's THRILLER soon took over.

1983 - Boy George - drag queen
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "Relax" - America didn't understand wha the song was about, ejaculation and was BANNED before anyone could see it on screen.
Gay soddomy scenes
Never got played on the radio, however was still a very successful record.
George Michael - "I Want Your Sex" - BANNED - too graphic
The Prodogy - "Smack My Bitch Up" - BANNED - too graphic, however the twist at the end of the music video shows a women staring in the mirror instead of a man which everyone thought so that "eased the blow" for The Prodigy

Before MTV, no one knew what Rock 'n' Roll looked like, no one would know what you looked like.
"I Want My MTV". Many artists would mention this in their songs.

Micheal Jackson:
"Billy Jean", "Thriller" and "Beat It" were possibly the biggest videos of that time and possibly still to this day.
"Thriller" is classsed to be one if the greatest video ever of all time and it was inspired by the film "American Wolf".

Audience Theory

An alternative viewpoint to the audience theory comes from the uses and gratifications theory which primaraly focuses on the idea that media audiences make active use of what the media offer. The audience has a set of needs which the media in one form or another meet. The needs that the media meet fall into 4 seperate categories, Diversion, Personal Relationships, Personal Identity and Surveillance.

Diversion: a form of escaping from the pressures of everyday life

Personal Relationships: where the viewer gains companionship, either with the television characters or through conversations with others about television

Personal Identity: where the viewer is able to comapre their life with the lives of characters and situations on television, to explore , re-affirm or question their personal identity

Surveillance: where the media are looked upon for a suplpy of information about what is happening in the world. An example of this would be the internet but more specifically, Web 2.0

Some theorists also believe that the media has a comparativley weak influence in moulding individual beliefs, opinions and attitudes and that other factors present in society, such as personal contact and religion are more likely to influence people.

Professor Nicholas Abercrombie said in his book "Audiences" "Audiences are not blank sheets of paper on which media messages can be written; members of an audience will have prior attitudes and beliefs which will determine how effective media messages are".

Video that Killed Radio Star

  • In the early 1930's teenagers started to copy movies and song lyrics which depicted violence and encouraged this new "brand" of teenagers into getting in trouble with the law
  • Bohemian Rhapsody was the first proper music video and cost £3,500
  • Music critics didnt like the idea of pop stars acting in their music videos
  • Micheal Nezbit is the creator of MTV (Music TeleVision)
  • Micheal Nezbit created pop clips to show people that music does actually work on the T.V
  • "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video that was shown on MTV
  • In 1985 CD's were first available in shops
  • Micheal Jackson is known to be not only the King of Pop but also the King of Videos
  • The music video to Thriller started the home video phase

Song Choice

This is the song which we have decided to do for our media A2 project.

Will's Textual Analysis of a video

The song I have chosen for my textual analysis is ‘Modestep - To The Stars (Break The Noize & The Autobots Remix)’. Modestep who created the original song are a new drum and base group who have recently got into the charts with popular songs such as ‘Sunlight’. This song however was not as popular as the remixed which was done by ‘Break The Noize &The Autobots’ who are dubstep DJs who are currently not very well known this song has probably brought them to more mainstream attention.

I would definitely classify this song to be in the genre of dubstep due to its heavy baselines and drops. During the video which I would classify as mainly a performance based the production when the bass “drops” the scene cuts to dancing scenes of a more hardcore nature compared to the build up which is quite relaxed. In many dubstep and drum and base songs the build up is often slow and calm and leads on to the main storyline once the song “drops”.

Due to the sound of this song with the fast changes of the beat, fast cuts have been made usually linking from the crowd switching to the artist on stage. Most of the shots of the crowd are of a fun nature showing them all having a great time. Most people viewing the video may be encouraged to go and watch the band live as it looks so good on the video so through the video they are almost advertising their live shows.

The lyrics in this video do not usually match the scene this is mainly due to it being a remix and muddled up. However a lot of dubstep songs do not even have lyrics at all and some videos can depict a storyline without the use of lyrics.  However the mood of this song is a happy one with people having a good time and enjoying the music so the energy of the song mainly comes from the catchy tune.

There are many close ups of the band on stage and off having a good time bringing a fun nature to the video. The crowd close ups are usually when the base drops and we see the dancing and all the fun the audience are having.

In my personal opinion I think that this video is a very impressive and has been done well with the use of different shots and length of shots to suit the beat of the song and match it. The lack of storyline does not matter due to the beat and feeling of the song, the addition of off set shots of the band and the crowd also add to the crazy mood of the song.

Louis's Textual Analysis of a Music Video

The video I have chosen is “Shot Yourself in the Foot Again” by Skream and Example. Skream is an underground dubstep artist but is on the rise to becoming a well-known dubstep artist/DJ. Example is an artist who has varied his genre of music between dubstep, drum and bass, hip-hop and also grime. Example has had a number of number ones in the past few years which involve “Changed the Way You Kiss me” and “Kickstart”.

However I would specify this video to be a dubstep song due to the beats and heavy bass line that is dropped between start and mid-point of the song. Characteristics of this genre would be the large amount of bass in nearly all of dubstep songs, lack of vocals and the upbeat tempo which changes when the “drop” of the song happens. The drop of the song is normally the most iconic part of a dubstep song, this is where normally the heavy bass comes in along with electro sound effects and beats. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals". In this video there are 2 occasions where there is a drop but they last for around 1 minute. On both of these occasions, when the drop occurs the video shows a party atmosphere and everyone having a good time in a pub and then the second drop in a club. Both of these scenes have very fast clips which last around one tenth of a second each and this carries on for around 5 seconds when the drops of the songs occur.

The lyrics in the song depict the storyline, which is basically a man’s birthday and his girlfriend has prepared dinner and a nice evening. However, he decides to go out with his friends and misses the dinner with his girlfriend. The video shows his girlfriend becoming very emotional and aggressive but also at the same time showing the man having a good time on his birthday. There is a twist right at the end where the girl finds out that she is pregnant and then the video leaves on a cliff-hanger and ends. There are only three different verses and they are repeated several times throughout the song and this backs up my point about the lack of vocals in a dubstep song. The lyrics are telling the man his wrong doings throughout the song, the first verse is,
“Take a bag with your clothes
And leave your keys by the door
‘coz she never want to see you no more
Never should have listen to the serpent
You shot yourself in the foot again”

This is exactly what happens at the end of the video and the title of the song “Shot Yourself in the Foot Again” is a common expression to say to people who have made a mistake and lost something that otherwise they would of gained if they didn’t make that mistake.

They are not that many close ups of either characters but when there is a close up they usually vary different emotions for example, at the beginning there is a close up on the women and she is smiling, when there is another one the man shows confusion, then another one of the man shows him having a good time. There aren’t however any reference to the notion of looking and also no intertextual references. This video is very narrative based and has a strong storyline throughout it and also has a surprising at the end and leaves it as a cliff-hanger. In my personal view I think that this video is a very good and has been done well with the use of different shots and length of shots to suit the beat of the song and match it. I also like the storyline very much due to the fact that it is a very realistic situation and happens to some people around the world so people may find it more easily to relate to the video.

Genre choice and description

Electronic dance music originated in south London, England. Types of electrontic music range from Dubstep to House and Jungle. The genre has evolved from when it first came into the mainstream in the 80s, and its sound is known around the world in many different forms.

DJ stands for "Disc Jockey" and a DJ is someone who person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience. Now due to the improvement in music technology, DJing has become easier to manage due to certain effects and controls people can use in order to mix songs together. Dubstep DJ's as like any other DJ's have faced the changes of music in the genre of music which they DJ in. As mentioned before, dubstep has gone through alot of changes within the last 10 years and the type of music within dubstep has changed dramatically.

Between 2010 and present day the electronic sub-culture "dubstep" has become extremely popular. Since the early 2000's and late 1990's dubstep has evolved and changed its style to fit a wider audience.  Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals". The main DJ's in Dubstep are as follows:
  • Skrillex
  • Benga
  • Skream
  • Nero
  • Chase and Status
  • Breakage
  • Doctor P
  • Flux Pavillion
  • ModeStep
  • Magnetic Man
The year 2009 saw the dubstep sound gaining further worldwide recognition, often through the assimilation of elements of the sound into other genres, in a manner similar to drum and bass before it. At the start of the year, UK electronic duo La Roux put their single "In for the Kill" in the remix hands of Skream. They then gave remix duties of "I'm Not Your Toy" to Nero and then again with their single "Bulletproof" being remixed by Zinc.
Throughout 2010, dubstep was beginning to hit the pop charts, with "I Need Air" by Magnetic Man reaching number 10 in the UK singles chart. This presented a turning point in the popularity of mainstream dubstep amongst UK listeners as it was placed on rotation on BBC Radio 1. "Katy On a Mission" by Katy B (produced by Benga) followed, debuting at number 5 in the UK singles chart, and stayed in the top 10 for five more weeks. In February 2011, Chase & Status's second album No More Idols reached No.2 in the UK album chart.

In July 2011 DJ Fresh's track "Louder", which hit number 1 in the UK singles chart, becoming the first ever dubstep track to achieve this."Louder", backed by its use in an advertising campaign for Lucozade, managed to remain in the top 10 of the charts for 6 weeks. By mid-August, the UK had a second dubstep number one courtesy of Nero's "Promises". Dubstep is a new genre unlike rock and other genres that have been around for a long while and are very mainstream dubstep is very much an indie genre. It was created around 2000 in London, it was inspired and is allot like grime, drum and bass and electro. The reason the genre is so popular with indie artists is you need no instrumental talent don’t have to worry about space it can be created on a laptop or desktop computer with programs such as fruityloops’ which is just one of the popular programs used when making dubstep music. Dubstep is often a 2 step rhythm with a heavy baseline with around 140 beat per minute. Even though this genre is still very indie and underground you can find sites such as MySpace music full of dubstep artists, more recently dubstep has become bigger with artists such as JME and he has also featured some dubstep artists on his tracks such as Skream.

Due to dubstep being so new and indie they often do not have any high end videos to their music often they just have a picture shown for the time the song is on, this again comes down to funding and the reason people make dubstep is its cheap to make.
Dubstep has now grown and is now recognised outside of London and the UK, due to its dance like rhythms it can often be found to be played in clubs and the involvement of bigger name stars has helped boost dubstep to becoming a much bigger genre within music.
Dubstep also can be split into smaller sub genres as many people take the music in different direction turning them either into dance like tracks or more grime and rap style tracks. A popular theme within dubstep is to use already made beats or old songs and relay the beat allot like many of the newer dance tracks have a original 80-90’s song behind them. It will often use many pre recorded sounds. Typically a dubstep song will have a ‘mc’ or a singer that will lay vocals over the track; however there are many tracks that are just instrumentals.

Recently dubstep has become much bigger with artists such as 'Xzibit' and 'Snoop Dogg' both massive stars in the USA and 'Chase & Status' who are linked with other genres that are related to dubstep. 'Eastern Jam's' was a song that got the publicity and helped boost the knowledge of the genre in 2009.

Research into music videos

We have been lloking at various different types of videos and these are the ones which we decided to research.

This video is both concept and narrative based which is a similiar effect which we want to achieve in our video. This video changes in various ways to the beat of the song, for example when the first "drop" of the song occurs the male character is attacked and when the male and female characters are resting the music calms down.

Let You Go by Chase and Status is a widely known song mainly being in the UK. This video depicts a story line of a famous T.V presenter who has different side to him compared to the one that most people see on T.V. Once the music drops we see the true side of the character and unlike the video above, the lyrics match the mise en scene and also tell the story.

Skrillex is rapidly becoming possibly the biggest artist in dubstep in modern day music. This video can have a slightly disturbing video but I feel that at the end of the video the audience are cheering on the video fro what it stands for, which is against phedophiles. However, this song does take over 1 minute to get to the main part of the song and this may cause the audience to loose interest fairly quickly.

Although this song has 1 or 2 lyrics, as we know by the song, the song is virtually just a whole load of heavy bass going throughout the song

Introduction

We made this blog to show our progress and devlepoment throughout the course of creating our music video. In this we will go through the different ideas and methods we looked at during the making of our film. We will also research other peoples work and obtain and learn ideas and techniques in order for us to film our production.

We will be working as a team in order to produce our music video and therefore it should share the workload and save time and also combine our knowledge to hopefully produce a masterpiece of a music video!
